In order to “engage with community and world” we have to be a people who are ready to obey. Read the Bible account about Ananias below. Can you imagine Ananias’ objections to what the Lord was asking? “You want me to go to a perfect stranger? Go? To a murderer of Jesus’ followers like me?” How would you have reacted? What would you have done?
“The Lord told him, ‘Go to the house of Judas on Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. In a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to restore his sight.’
‘Lord,’ Ananias answered, ‘I have heard many reports about this man and all the harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem. And he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on your name.’
But the Lord said to Ananias, ‘Go! This man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and before the people of Israel. I will show him how much he must suffer for my name.’
Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing his hands on Saul, he said, ‘Brother Saul, the Lord–Jesus, who appeared to you on the road as you were coming here–has sent me so that you may see again and be filled with the Holy Spirit.’ Immediately, something like scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was baptized, and after taking some food, he regained his strength. Saul spent several days with the disciples in Damascus.
At once he began to preach in the synagogues that Jesus is the Son of God” (Acts 9:11-20).
Let’s unite in prayer asking the Holy Spirit to help us be a people ready to engage no matter what the Lord asks and no matter what the cost. Like Ananias, our one act of obedience can change the world.
May 9-15
As we look to our General Conference being “a resourcing event to bring about revival and renewal for the church” let’s continue to pray for Ministry Group #4. They are to help the church reach the goal Every Place: Engaging Community and World (Impacting “Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth”). As you approach these times of prayer, ask the Holy Spirit to:
- Help us to make the right choices so that we spend time in the Word.
- Help our spiritual “ears” be open to listening for and hearing God’s instructions.
- Help us not fear what the Lord asks of His church and, as the first believers experienced, that He would work His boldness in us (Acts 4:29-31).
