Related to Paragraph(s) #: 6300

Whereas:

When churches have an active membership under 30, people leadership can become stagnant and ingrown

Therefore, be it resolved:

That smaller churches, in merited situations and with Conference discretion, be allowed flexibility with leadership structures, such as a leadership board that includes non-members, rather than a BOA.

Does the resolution have a direct relationship to the vision and mission of the Free Methodist Church?

Yes.

How will the proposed change help us accomplish our vision and mission?

It may allow for more flexibility and the breakout of stagnancy experienced by small, family-style churches.

The Resolutions Committee rates this resolution as:

(C) Rejected – anticipate General Conference rejection

Comments:

The idea is good, but membership as a basic board requirement seems best to the majority of NCC delegates.

I can see the intent here and applaud the willingness to seek new ideas to help spur growth. What about an adaptation? What if the local church could petition the Conference BOA for a temporary remedy of seeking additional board members from lay people of other FM churches? This was a step used when our church plant was getting started. We had a board made up of two lay people from our church who met spiritual qualifications, and then added to it from our conference. It worked wonderfully.
